What we do

Upholstery is not just smaller carpet. The fiber types are different (cotton, linen, microfiber, wool blend, sometimes silk), the construction is layered (face fabric, padding, frame), and the cleaning method has to match. We test for colorfastness before we extract, identify the fabric type, and pick the chemistry that lifts the soil without bleeding the dye or shrinking the cover.

Most upholstery calls are: a sectional that has been the family TV-watching spot for 5 years, a sofa that survived a toddler phase, or a chair that the dog has claimed. We can handle all three. We also clean mattresses (after a spill, after a stomach bug, or just as a one-time deep clean) and area rugs.

For heirloom or wool-blend area rugs, we recommend pickup and shop cleaning rather than in-home. The shop has the controlled drying environment and the rinse capacity that hand-wash rugs need. We pick up and deliver back across Solano, Napa, and the East Bay.

Owner-operated, no subcontractors, no surprise pricing.

Our process

We start with fabric identification. The tag on the underside of the cushion tells us what cleaning method is safe (W = water-safe, S = solvent-only, WS = either, X = vacuum only). If the tag is missing or worn off, we test an inconspicuous corner first.

For water-safe fabrics we pre-treat, agitate with a soft brush, and extract with low-pressure hot water. Low pressure is the key, too much pressure on upholstery saturates the padding and takes days to dry. For solvent-only fabrics we use dry-cleaning chemistry that lifts soil without wetting the material.

Most in-home upholstery jobs take 60 to 90 minutes. Drying takes 2 to 6 hours. Rugs that go to the shop typically come back in 5 to 7 business days.

Who upholstery cleaning is for

  • Family sectionals that have been the TV spot for 5+ years
  • Sofas after a pet accident or a kid spill
  • Mattresses after a stomach bug or coffee spill
  • Heirloom area rugs that need wool-safe cleaning
  • Office chairs and conference seating
  • Move-in / move-out apartment seating

The furniture is dirtier than the carpet

We run a test for skeptical customers. We clean one cushion of the sofa and leave the rest. The clean cushion looks like it came from a different couch. Fabric hides soil the way carpet never can, because you are looking at it from the side, not from above. The average family sofa collects body oil, sunscreen, food, pet dander, and dust every single day, and dark upholstery hides years of it.

Mr. Fresh Carpet Care has been cleaning upholstery and rugs in Fairfield, CA since 2013. Same family-owned company, same IICRC-certified technicians, same honest pricing as our carpet work. Call or text (707) 816-7103 for a firm quote. Send us a photo of the piece and we can usually price it on the spot.

Sofa and Sectional Cleaning

Sofas and sectionals are where the household actually lives, and they show it fastest on the arms, headrests, and seat cushions. We identify the fabric first, because the tag inside the cushion tells us what the fiber can handle. Then we pre-treat the oil and soil buildup, agitate gently, and extract. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and performance weaves come back close to new. Natural fibers like cotton and linen need gentler chemistry and more drying care, and we adjust for that rather than forcing one method onto everything.

Most pieces are dry to the touch the same evening. If a cushion has taken years of daily use, we will tell you up front how much recovery to expect. Honest expectations beat a dramatic before-and-after promise we cannot keep.

Area Rug Cleaning

Fairfield and the Suisun Valley have more serious rugs than people expect, from wine-country homes with hand-knotted wool pieces to family rooms with big machine-made synthetics. These are not the same job. Wool holds ten times its weight in soil and needs dye-stable, pH-correct cleaning. Viscose crushes and yellows when cleaned like polyester. A cheap rug from a box store can be cleaned aggressively; a hand-knotted rug from your grandmother cannot.

We test fibers and dyes before choosing a method. Washable synthetics get deep extraction. Delicate naturals get low-moisture care matched to the fiber. If a rug is fragile enough that any wet cleaning is a risk, we say so before touching it. That conversation costs us jobs occasionally which is exactly why neighbors keep sending us their good rugs.

Pet Stain and Odor Removal

Pet accidents are the number one reason people call us about both furniture and rugs, and the hard truth is this: urine that soaked through does not live on the surface. On a sofa, that urine sits deep in the cushion foam. On a rug, in the backing and the pad below. Surface cleaning makes the spot look better while the odor stays, and every humid day brings it back.

Our pet treatment goes to the depth of the contamination. We locate every deposit, including the ones you do not know about, treat below the surface, and extract the residue out rather than sealing it in. When foam or backing is too far gone, we tell you that too, so you spend money on replacement rather than on cleaning that cannot win.

Stain Protection and Water Repellent Application

Freshly cleaned fabric is also unprotected fabric, because cleaning removes whatever factory protection remained. For households with kids, dogs, or a white sofa and a bold streak, we offer stain protection and water repellent application after cleaning. It does not make fabric bulletproof. It buys you time: spills bead up rather than soak in immediately, which turns a permanent stain into a paper towel moment. We suggest it where it makes sense and skip the pitch where it does not, like a formal room nobody sits in.

Neighborhoods we cover for upholstery cleaning

We run upholstery cleaning out of our shop on Suisun Valley Road in Fairfield, California, and dispatch across Solano, Napa, and east Contra Costa County. In Fairfield that means Paradise Valley, Rancho Solano, Laurel Creek, Gold Ridge, the downtown blocks, the North Texas Street corridor, and the Travis Air Force Base housing out in 94535.

West of us we cover Cordelia, Green Valley, and the Suisun Valley wine country. North we reach Suisun City, including Lawler Ranch and the Old Town waterfront, then Vacaville out to Browns Valley and Cheyenne, and Dixon on the agricultural east edge of the county. South and west we serve Vallejo and Mare Island, historic Benicia, American Canyon, the city of Napa with its Fuller Park and Alta Heights neighborhoods, and Concord across the Crystyl Ranch, Dana Estates, and Clayton Valley areas of Contra Costa County.

Upholstery & Rug Cleaning FAQs

How much does upholstery cleaning cost?

National average is around $174 per piece. A standard sofa runs $100 to $300, sectionals $120 to $400 depending on size, single chairs $10 to $80, and dining chairs starting at $10 each. We quote over the phone after a few questions and the price holds when we arrive. Optional Scotchgard or fabric protection adds $20 to $35.

How is a sectional priced differently than a regular sofa?

Sectionals are quoted by piece count. A 3-piece L-shape is roughly 1.5x a standard sofa, and a 5+ piece configuration is closer to 2-2.5x. The total fabric area is what drives price, plus the time to detach and clean the connectors. We confirm piece count on the phone so the quote is firm before we arrive.

Will my couch shrink, fade, or change color?

Not if we identify the fabric correctly and use the right method. We test colorfastness on an inconspicuous corner before we extract. For W and WS fabrics (water-safe) we use low-pressure hot extraction. For S (solvent-only) and X (vacuum only) we switch methods or decline the job rather than risk damage. We have been doing this since 2013 and shrinkage or bleed is not something our customers see.

What is the cleaning code on my couch tag and why does it matter?

The W/S/WS/X code on the underside of your cushion tells the cleaner which method is safe. W = water cleaning okay. S = solvent only. WS = either. X = vacuum only, no liquid. Cleaning a solvent-only fabric with water can permanently shrink or stain it. If the tag is missing we test a corner first, never skip this step.

How long does upholstery take to dry?

Surface dry in 2 to 4 hours. Sit-on-it dry in 4 to 6. Fully dry through the padding by 12 hours. Leave cushions standing on edge after we leave if you can, it speeds the drying time substantially. Avoid sitting on cushions or replacing pillows until they pass the touch-back test.

Do you pick up and deliver area rugs?

Yes, across Solano, Napa, and the East Bay. Pickup is free if the job is over $200. Wool, silk, and heirloom rugs go to the shop for controlled cleaning. The rinse and drying environment we run there is far better than what we can do in your home. Synthetic area rugs we can usually clean on-site. Shop turnaround is typically 5 to 7 business days.

Can you get pet smell out of a couch?

Most of the time yes. We use enzyme pre-treatment on protein-based stains (urine, vomit, blood) and extract through the fabric. Deep contamination in the padding sometimes needs a second pass or a deeper teardown. We will tell you on the call if your situation is a clean or a remediation, and what the realistic expectation is.

How often should I have my upholstery cleaned?

Every 12 to 24 months for the primary family sofa. Every 6 to 12 months if it is the daily TV-watching spot, or if you have pets that sleep on it. Mattresses every 12 to 18 months. Office chairs every 12 months. Catching soil before it sets is the whole game. Once a stain has been there 6+ months it gets harder to lift.

Can you clean a mattress?

Yes. Mattress cleaning is one of the most underrated services we do. After a spill, a stomach bug, or just a yearly refresh, we treat with appropriate chemistry for the fabric, extract, and finish with an antimicrobial pass. A standard queen runs $100 to $150. We can also handle bed bug remediation referrals if that is the actual issue.

Do you offer same-day upholstery cleaning?

Often yes if you call in the morning, especially for Solano and Napa zips. East Bay we usually offer next-day. Sectionals and multi-piece jobs are best scheduled a day ahead so we can block the right time. Call or text (707) 816-7103 and we will tell you the soonest open window.
