Stain protection is a treatment we apply to carpet or upholstery after cleaning that helps the fibers resist spills and soil. The way it works is straightforward. The treatment coats the fiber so that when a liquid lands on it, the liquid beads up on the surface and sits there for a while instead of wicking straight down into the pile. That head start is the whole point. A spill that beads on top is a spill you can blot up with a towel in the first minute. A spill that soaks in before you notice it is a stain that needs a professional.
Most carpet leaves the factory with a protective treatment already on it, but that factory coating wears off over time from foot traffic, cleaning, and everyday use. By the time carpet is a few years old, the high-traffic lanes and the spots where people sit have usually lost most of their protection, which is exactly where spills tend to happen. Reapplying after a professional clean puts that protection back where it has worn thinnest.
We apply it after cleaning, not before, because the treatment needs to bond to a clean fiber to work properly. It is a genuine help, not a force field. It will not make carpet bulletproof, and it does not mean you can leave a spill sitting overnight and expect no mark. What it buys you is time and easier cleanup, and it slows the rate at which the carpet re-soils in the traffic lanes so it stays looking clean longer between professional visits.

Our process
We apply stain protection as an add-on to a professional clean, because the treatment has to bond to a clean, still-slightly-damp fiber to hold. We do not apply it over soil, since that would just seal the dirt in.
After we finish the extraction pass, we apply the protective treatment evenly across the carpet or upholstery with a fine sprayer, focusing on the areas that take the most use, the traffic lanes, the dining area, the seat cushions. Then we groom it into the pile so it coats the fibers rather than sitting on top, and let it dry.
Once the treatment is dry, the surface is ready for normal use. We walk you through what to expect, how to blot a spill so the protection does its job, and roughly how long the treatment lasts with regular use. On a typical household it holds up well until the next professional clean, at which point we recommend reapplying to the areas that see the most wear.

That beading is the head start that turns a knocked-over glass into a towel job instead of a service call. It works on carpet and on upholstery, and it is why a treated seat cushion shrugs off a coffee splash that would have soaked into an untreated one. Like stain protection, we apply it after cleaning so it bonds to a clean fiber, it wears down fastest in the busiest areas, and it is honest help rather than a guarantee. Leave a spill sitting overnight and it can still leave a mark. Blot it promptly and the repellent does its job.
